Layouts 0

Save the desks and seats on the floor right now as a named layout — “Testing rows”, “Group pods”, “Discussion circle” — then switch between them any time. Switching replaces the floor with the saved layout, so save first if you want to keep what's there. The roster and Keep Apart / Put Together rules are shared by every layout in this section.

Roster 0

Paste a column of names, or type one and add Names are Last, First — flip them

Paste straight from a spreadsheet: extra columns, row numbers and duplicates are dropped. Click the flag to mark a student who needs a specific spot. Click the pencil for a note. Click the circle to add a photo — useful for a substitute matching faces to names. Bulk photo import matches a whole folder of image files to roster names by filename in one go (“Ada Lovelace.jpg”, “lovelace_ada_2.png” and similar all match). Photos are downscaled before saving and stay in this browser like everything else.

Notes stay with the chart in this browser and inside any file you export, and they never appear on the printed page. Keep them short and practical — “front row, vision” rather than anything from a medical or IEP document.

These two will sit next to each other. Chain several pairs to build a pod (A with B, B with C).

Print history for one student

Record this arrangement saves who's sitting where right now, dated and labeled (“Unit 3”), tagged with the quarter above. Once something is recorded, Auto-assign tries to avoid reseating a student in a spot they've already had, and gives a front-row seat first to whoever hasn't had one yet this quarter — both are best-effort nudges the solver applies when the room allows it, same as Keep Apart / Put Together, not a rule it will break the room to satisfy. The two print buttons turn the record into evidence for a parent or admin conversation about seating fairness.

Where this lives: nothing is uploaded, ever. Your sections, student names, notes and desk layouts are saved in this browser’s own storage on this computer, under the key seating-chart-v1, and they reload when you come back.

Erase saved data in the toolbar deletes all of it from this browser in one click. On a shared classroom machine, that or Save to file is the habit worth having.
